Bob Melvin: The Man Who Led the Oakland A’s to a Historic 2002 Season
The 2002 Oakland Athletics season was one of the most memorable in the team’s history. Led by manager Bob Melvin, the A’s won 103 games and earned the American League West division title. This was the first time the A’s had won the division since 1992, and the first time they had won more than 100 games since 1975. The A’s would go on to win the American League Championship Series and make it to the World Series, where they lost to the San Francisco Giants in seven games.
Bob Melvin was hired as the A’s manager in December 2001. He had previously spent three seasons as the Seattle Mariners’ third base coach and had been the Milwaukee Brewers’ bench coach in 1999 and 2000. Melvin was the first manager to take the A’s to the playoffs since Tony La Russa in 1992.
Melvin was born in Palo Alto, California and played college baseball at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 2nd round of the 1981 MLB draft and made his major league debut in 1985. He was a backup catcher and infielder for nine seasons with the Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles and San Francisco Giants.
In 2002, the A’s were led by a core group of players that included future Hall of Fame pitcher Barry Zito, MVP candidate Miguel Tejada and 20-game winner Tim Hudson. The A’s also had a strong bullpen, led by closer Billy Koch and setup man Jim Mecir. The A’s scored the second-most runs in the AL and allowed the fewest, and their +252 run differential was the highest in the AL.
Melvin’s aggressive style of managing, which included frequent lineup changes and a reliance on a deep bullpen, was a key factor in the A’s success. He was also praised for his ability to manage the egos of his star players and get the most out of them.
The A’s went on an amazing 20-game winning streak during the 2002 season, which was the longest in American League history at the time. They also went on to win 103 games, the most in the American League since 1998.
The A’s would go on to lose to the Giants in the World Series, but Bob Melvin had established himself as one of the top managers in baseball. He would remain with the A’s through the 2006 season before being hired by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the offseason.
